About the Recipe
Skip the store-bought veggie burgers and make your own delicious and healthy black bean burger at home!
This recipe is packed with plant-based protein and fiber, making for a hearty, satisfying and much healthier alternative to traditional beef burgers. They are surprisingly easy to make and hold together beautifully on the grill or in a pan. Serve on a whole wheat bun with your favorite fresh toppings for a fantastic plant-based meal.
Instructions
- Prepare the Bean Mixture: In a large bowl, add the very dry black beans. Mash them well with a fork or potato masher until they are about half-mashed, leaving some texture.
- Add Veggies and Binders: To the bowl, add the finely chopped bell pepper, onion, minced garlic, egg (or flax egg), whole wheat breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.
- Mix and Form Patties: Mix all the ingredients together until well combined, but be careful not to overmix. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties about (half inch/1.5cm) thick. If the mixture is too wet to handle, add a few more breadcrumbs.
- Cook the Burgers: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the patties in the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, until they are browned, crispy, and heated through.
- Assemble and Serve: Lightly toast the whole wheat buns. Serve the black bean burgers on the buns with your favorite healthy toppings like lettuce, tomato slices, red onion and avocado.
