Cryptic
Narly young men....
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is the largest Gothic cathedral in the
world. Before it inspired from the ground it was something
Romanesque. I think the difference between the two architectures is
Gothic is of the mind, Romanesque of the heart, both are power. L.C.
Tiffany constructed a wonder of a chapel in the bowels of the cathedral to be,
the crypt, in the time before it rose into the light. He took it down,
took it home and left bareness.
There is a feeling you get confronted by the nothingness even if you don't
know beauty was once there. May be it is the ghost of a broken heart, a
lost love? I don't know, but there is an eeriness, a desolation, in the
crypt. Something about the mud, and duck boards, exposed brick piers,
sarcophagi of dead bishops, that is not right, that echoes an
unseen joy, a never to be seen again joy.
