New Moon Dog

When the Sun looked down on all the creatures it made for the Earth it was pleased.  As too was the shimmering silvery Moon as she looked down upon her creatures.  Each had creatures for their times that honored them.

But one naked Sun creature had fear of the Moon’s time because it could dream.  It went to the Sun and begged “My dear parent stay over me at all times so that night does not come and I am not fearful or cold.”  “Oh dear little one, this I can not do for that is my sister’s time and she must shine too, have you not seen how dim she is when we both share the sky?  But I will care for your request and see what can be done.”

And so on a cold winter evening the sun and the moon were close to each other and the Sun asked the Moon, “My dear sister I have a naked creature which dreams and is fearful of your time and creatures.”  “Yes I have seen this creature shaking and quivering trying to see with wide open eyes not meant for Night. There is one creature that is most powerful and loyal to me and sings my praises for all the world to hear.  This creature could share the day and wrap the dreams of your creature in fur and warmth when I shine; if it should choose to.”

And that very night the Moon spoke to her Wolves.  “Most beautiful and loyal of all my creatures have you seen the naked creature that wakes in our time?” “Yes!” they cried back.  “This creature needs its dreams wrapped and warmed at night.  Would any of you care to share the Day with it and share the Night as well?”  And a black wolf as dark as a starless night came forward, “I shall share my day and night with the furless ones, because my nights are lonely, even my brothers can not see me with their night eyes.  But in the Day which is not our time I would glisten in blackness.”  “It shall be so, but you will wait till I hide myself because it will break my heart to see you go to the Day.  And too, you must lose your name and become known as Dog.”

And so on the day that the Moon hid her self the black wolf went to sleep with the furless creature and kept it warm and wrapped its dreams.  The furless did not wake but smiled through that dark night.  At the next rise of Sun the New Moon Dog walked and played with the furless ones; happy to be seen and loved.

But on the Night when the full face of its Mother is seen through out the world, New Moon Dog and all its descendants call to her and sing her praises forever remembering when they were Hers and creatures of the Night.
