Aligataaq
Aligataaq was the loveliest in all the Arctic. Mother sent her on the blazing tundra to pick the last berries.. Work went quickly in the autumn sun, heart occupied dreaming of Uyagok and marriage.
An ugly arulataq, scarier than a tanik, appeared from nowhere.
"Give yourself and bear my children!"
"Never! I am Uyagok’s"
"Then you will be no ones!"
He used his mind powers to put her to sleep and threw her in a tundra pond.
Snows came. The pond froze encasing her in ice.
Miserable Uyagok, searched months for his love through his tears. He knew he needed guidance. He gathered his friends.
"We will have a nalukatak. You will throw me so high that I can talk with the Innua where he flies and ask where he has taken her spirit".
"I have not taken her. She is imprisoned. Wolf will be your tuungaq. Follow him and bring a stomach of seal oil."
He followed Wolf who could sense her spirit, finding her within blue ice, sleeping. He poured the oil on the ice. His fire freed and awakened her.
The umialikit was the finest ever. Aligataaq and Uyagok welcomed all.
