Old Town

From the Great Denali
to the Bay of Biscayne
sign of a war lost

the vision so varnished
homogeneity almost Japanese
Eisenhaurer's bypass
maybe TV
Macdonalds and Taco bells
Where went the Dark part of town?

where is stories told
by drunks, workin' men
and prostitutes
of time twisted souls
and broken bank accounts
dream ports never visited
full of dancin' Thai girls

Life is unbalanced
without the feel of callus and wear
in this forest of the same trees
heart has no City
or is it a Christian ideal
of purity

Where's the washer women at the laundry
and their talk wonder full families
was it promise of whiter tomorrow
destroyed the nuance of society
and the smoky pool hall dirty
with beer bottles full of butts
promise of a run and a few bucks

there is no gas on the steps
of the University
thought lost to money dreams
bought off by life un-cherished
remote control
and reruns of
I Dream of Jeannie
