Building a Brave New World                            Home

From 1976 to 1986 I practiced architecture and interior design, primarily in New York.  I was not licensed in either but I did accomplish over 7000 projects during that period.  I hope to scan many of the drawings and put them up in this section.

Though I practiced these arts, or course, I could not call myself an architect.  Usually, I called myself a designer-builder since I often built the projects I designed.  Frequently others would refer to me as an architect, The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, as an example, listed me as the Architect in Residence, quite an honor even for a "real" architect.  I only bring this up because I believe ones work, in the end, defines us as equally as we define our work.  My work was architecture.

I suspect as you get to go through the drawings many of my clients names will be as interesting to read as the work itself.  Philip Johnson, Frank O. Gehry, Walker O. Cain as well as the names of other architects, artists and pundits adorn the title blocks of my drawings.  Institutions too, like the Cathedral, Center for Inter-American Relations, California Academy of Science, Museum of the American Indian, even the Four Seasons Restaurant, are there.  But, it is usually the little works, the jewels, I am most proud of, and kitchens!

The other thing you will see are the names of the wonderful people who worked with me.  Certainly, Michael Smoczynski, Craig Murray and Sam Clayton are great artists in their own right, but folks and great architects like Janet Tomlinson, Linda Haskell, John Kolp, and Dorcas Roehrs were equal contributors to many projects.

Enjoy!
